Gundahar’s Story
My clan used to roam the highlands, secure in the power granted by our bond with a powerful dragon, a refugee from the depths we had allied with in time imemorial. Until the magisters came. Wielding powerful magic and an army of undead slave soldiers, they killed our strongest and captured the rest of us. Our dragon, unfortunately, slumbered hundreds of miles away, and was not there to aid us.
Most of the clan was ritually slain and converted into mindless undead. Those of us with any arcane talent, however, were forced to assist the magisters in doing so. I was ten when they took me. For another ten years I wore their manacles, inscribed their ritual circles, and allowed them to siphon my magic. Until my rebellions became too much, and the magisters decided to make me an undead minion. The chains were nothing new, but whatever magic they used at the start of the ritual, to bind my soul into my body and servitude, when that touched my soul, something awakened. And fought back.
I later realized that the something in my soul was draconic heritage; many of my clan carried some of the dragon's blood within our veins, but it manifested in few, and normally quite obviously in those it did manifest in. With the aid of the newfound power within me, I burst my bonds, both physical and spiritual, slew the magisters participating in the ritual, and escaped.
Now I try to survive. My clan is gone, what few remain alive beyond any true liberation. Within the reach of the magisters, I am hunted. When I can, when I dare, I hunt the magisters in return. For my protection, for vengeance, and because any who take away freedom from those whose freedom is not itself a threat to others are my enemy.
Freedom is the right of all sentient beings. Those who would use their freedom to deny life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness to others abdicate that right. From those I will take freedom.
And I will not be chained again.
