(This letter was quietly given, sealed, to the PCs, just as they were leaving for Mordentshire on their mission to find the Alchemist. They were instructed not to open it until they were in the middle of their journey, well away from the capital city. The handwriting is Valeria’s.)
I'm sorry that I had to lie to you, but we are being watched. Your mission is not what it seems.
This alchemist is likely a fraud. There are many such charlatans, who claim great powers of healing and so on. On the off chance that he's genuine, do as you were asked: investigate him; solicit his help; etc. Even if you judge him to be a fraud, pretend otherwise; pretend to investigate, pretend that you're in desperate need of his help, bring him back here. Do not let on that your purpose is anything else. In the meantime, watch for anything strange, anything unusual. For now, I cannot say more; but know that your quest is as important as I said—perhaps more so.
With great respect,
Valeria
P.S. Seek out Lord Byron Weathermay. Though now retired, he was once a stout warrior and a good man; and a friend to the Order. I believe he will help you, should you need it.
