General Information

Affected by the presence of the Dark Devourer and his minions, the mosquitoes of the Pripet Marshes? have been endowed with the powers of insanity and chaos. These swarms, with their mind-numbing drone, are still encountered throughout the swamplands of Pripet, even after the Dark Devourer’s defeat (and likely will be for a long time).

A mosquito swarm appears as a cloud of black mosquitos, each no larger than normal, but clearly acting as a group. Mosquito swarms are mindless; if uncommanded, they attack any warm-blooded creature, draining its blood until it dies. However, they respond to the telepathic commands of any demon servant of the Devourer?, and use their stupefying drone ability if ordered to do so.

Special Abilities

Blood Drain (Ex)
If a mosquito swarm successfully distracts a living creature, some mosquitoes attach themselves to the victim’s flesh, draining its blood. This attack deals 1d4 points of Constitution damage. For every 2 points of Con damage a mosquito swarm has inflicted, it takes a −2 penalty to AC and a −1 penalty to Reflex saves. These penalties dissipate after the swarm has had time to digest its meal, which takes 1 hour per point of Con damage inflicted.

Distraction (Ex)
Any living creature vulnerable to a mosquito swarm’s damage that begins its turn with the swarm in its square is nauseated for 1 round; a DC 16 Fortitude save negates the effect. Even after a successful save, spellcasting or concentrating on spells within the area of a swarm requires a Concentration check (DC 16 + spell level). Using skills requiring patience and concentration requires a DC 16 Concentration check. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Stupefying Drone (Su)
The buzzing of a mosquito swarm has a numbing effect on all living creatures within 30 feet. All affected creatures suffer a −2 penalty to Wisdom. Overlapping areas of stupefying drone from multiple mosquito swarms impose stacking penalties to Wisdom.

Skills
A mosquito swarm has a +4 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks.
