Main» Planar Artifacts

After your experience fighting the chaos ooze, Vasily and Nikolai analyze what they saw. Their analysis yields several predictions about the lasting effects of the ooze's influence; one interesting theoretical outcome is the prediction that as the chaos zone dissipates, the fading chaotic manifestations may leave behind physical objects: quasi-solidified, concentrated bits of energy eruptions, gravity flux, planar essence, or—warped time.

The variety of uses to which these "artifacts" may be put can only be vast, and fully exploring the applications—not to mention actually finding all the actual objects—would probably take months or years of dedicated search and investigation. But planar theory confidently predicts one potential use: the construction of temporary demiplanes.

Your theoretical predictions are as follows. The artifacts themselves, condensed manifestations of the chaos ooze's influence, will be stable; if not significantly disturbed, they should be storable indefinitely with no ill effects. If subjected to the appropriate Conjuration magic, however, an artifact will "unfold", reverting to an expanded, unstable state; a skilled spellcaster will be able to force this expansion to proceed in such a way that an extradimensional space is created.

In some ways this process is similar to casting a rope trick spell, and thus not inherently very useful. In fact, much like a rope trick, the resulting mini-demiplane will be quite temporary, likely with an even much shorter (and unpredictable) duration than the spell; and when the demiplane destabilizes, that'll be the end of that particular artifact, making them single-use items. The interesting thing, however, is that the demiplane generated by "unfolding" a given artifact should—if your theory is right—take on some (?) of the properties of that artifact.

The details of that particular piece of the theory remain to be worked out, and only experiments conducted with some actual artifacts will help you in this regard. But one example that springs to mind is the artifacts generated by regions of warped time should permit the creation of demiplanes with different temporal traits compared to Midgard: flowing, erratic, or even static time. Of course, regardless of the conditions within the demiplane, the extradimensional space will still be unstable, and will still collapse in mere hours or even minutes by Midgard time... or so the theory says. Empirical testing of any of this will have to wait until the chaos zone begins to fade and you (or your allies) can start collecting artifacts...
