Mercenary captain and wealthy businessman in Dusthill.
Ambrose commands an increasingly large mercenary company, based in Dusthill. Most of the mercenaries in the town are in his employ, and he’s always ready to hire capable warriors who arrive in Dusthill looking for work.
Besides being a mercenary captain, Ambrose also has another occupation—the nature of which, however, is somewhat of a mystery. He has an operation, somewhere in the wastes (not too far from Dusthill, by all appearances); he has a large contingent of laborers working for him; he is making what seems to be a large amount of money (given how much he is able to spend); he is shipping goods out of Dusthill. Ambrose’s men (both his mercenaries and the laborers) keep silent on the details of their boss’s work. Popular consensus in Dusthill, however, is that Ambrose must have found an old but not quite exhausted mine in the wastes, and has been extracting valuable materials (gemstones? gold? silver? mithral?!) from it.
Ambrose owns a beautiful villa in the town center of Dusthill, where he lives, along with his lieutenants and personal guards. This is a two-story, columned structure which he had built out of white stone. (Where this material was quarried from is also unknown.) He also has a large walled compound, located on the west (windward) side of the hill that overlooks the town center; this is where the laborers, and many of the rank-and-file mercenaries, live. Owing to the compound’s location (directly in the path of the duststorms that blow in from the wastes), it is isolated from the town; and the high walls of mud brick shield the place from prying eyes.
