Old cemetary, for a settlement that itself is long gone.
Here is an old cemetary, for a town (Halmerton) that itself is long gone. Parts have sunk into the ground, and also covered with sand and dirt and soil.
The crypts beneath the cemetary are mostly intact.
Crypts
The crypts were evidently constructed in stages. The western-most sections have the oldest constructions, and the date markers accordingly indicate the earliest dates of interment.
Central chamber
A small shrine stands here, to Pelor and also to various (evidently now quite obscure) saints. (The shrine seems to have been a later addition to the chamber.) Inscriptions also tell of the town’s history: that these are the burial crypts for the town of Halmerton, which was built in the year 10 R.C.1; and that such-and-such important and respected people and families are interred here.
Burial chamber of a great hero
Inscribed, in Celestial, above the gate to this chamber, is a traditional Pelorite prayer for those who have heroically given their lives in battle against evil.
The warriors interred here had risen as undead (a wight and several skeletal warriors).
The names engraved upon the tombs are gouged out. The dates are around the middle of the 50s R.C.2
Burial chamber of Lord Bronzehlm’s warriors
An engraved inscription on the wall in one of the eastern-most chambers reads:
The town of Halmerton is indebted to Lord Walther Bronzehlm for his generosity and valor. Here are interred the lord’s men, those brave and noble warriors who served in this town’s defense against its enemies. May their spirits find peace in the Shining Lord’s embrace.
Dates of death for those interred here span a period from the late 160s through the early 230s R.C.
1 This date, like some of the other engraved date markers in the crypts, has been visibly modified (a small section of stone neatly cut out of the wall, and a replacement block inserted, marked with the modified date). ⇑
