Old World» Skeleton

The animated bones of the dead—mindless automatons that obey the orders of their evil masters.

Contents

A skeleton is seldom garbed in anything more than the rotting remnants of any clothing or armor it was wearing when slain.

A skeleton does only what it is ordered to do. It can draw no conclusions of its own and takes no initiative. Because of this limitation, its instructions must always be simple, such as “Kill anyone who enters this chamber.” A skeleton attacks until destroyed, for that is what it was created to do.

Human warrior skeleton

This creature appears to be nothing but a set of animated bones. Pinpoints of red light smolder in its empty eye sockets.

The statistics given here may generally also be used for skeletons created from other Medium humanoids (orcs, tieflings, hobgoblins, gnolls, etc.). (The differences that distinguish characters of these races from one another either don’t survive skeletonization, or make little practical difference.)

Human warrior bloody skeleton

This creature appears to be nothing but a set of animated bones. Pinpoints of red light smolder in its empty eye sockets.

A bloody skeleton is coated in a slick layer of blood and gore infused with negative energy. This gore allows the skeleton to reform and heal itself.

For the purpose of creation via the animate dead spell, a bloody skeleton counts as having twice its hit dice. (This affects only how many hit dice of undead may be created with a single casting, and the material component cost to create the skeleton; the bloody skeleton still counts normally toward the limit of total hit dice of undead which may be controlled.)

Special Abilities

Deathless (Su)

A bloody skeleton is destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points, but it returns to unlife 1 hour later at 1 hit point, allowing its fast healing thereafter to resume healing it. A bloody skeleton can be permanently destroyed if it is destroyed by positive energy, if it is reduced to 0 hit points in the area of a bless or hallow spell, or if its remains are sprinkled with a vial of holy water.

Human warrior burning skeleton

A burning skeleton is surrounded by an aura of flames that deals fire damage to those it strikes.

For the purpose of creation via the animate dead spell, a burning skeleton counts as having twice its hit dice. (This affects only how many hit dice of undead may be created with a single casting, and the material component cost to create the skeleton; the burning skeleton still counts normally toward the limit of total hit dice of undead which may be controlled.)

A lion burning skeleton receives a +4 bonus on combat maneuver checks made to start and maintain a grapple.

Pounce

If a lion burning skeleton charges a foe, it can make a full attack, including two rake attacks.

Rake

A lion burning skeleton rakes with its two rear claws (attack bonus +9; damage 1d8+6 plus 1d6 fire).
