Sven's prophetic visions of four major threats to Midgard?, and the PCs' ongoing efforts to eliminate those threats.
Background
Since the beginning of the campaign, Sven has been occasionally visited by consistent dream-visions, which have shown him four different major threats to Midgard. He (and, by extension, his comrades) has made it his quest to prevent the doom that these dreams predicted.
The First Dream
Sven had this dream early in the campaign, when passing through the Pripet Marshes?.
You are standing at the base of an immense ash tree. Even the smallest of its roots dwarf you, its trunk is dozens of feet across and reaches into the sky, and its crown is hidden by the clouds. Its lower branches, those that you can see, reach far, creating a massive green canopy. You feel the same discomfort you've been feeling for the past week.
As you look closely, you see that the roots of the tree are shrinking back, retreating from the stone and earth upon which they sit. The roots, as well as the trunk, are apparently... smoldering, tiny sparks of flame consuming them slowly like embers of a dying fire. You look up, and see that the leaves appear grey-brown, diseased and frostbitten, and are shriveling.
You look out into the distance — you notice now that the tree (and you) stands on a colossal, solitary mountain peak — and see the following, in various directions.
You see... the edge of a forest, where it meets a wide open steppe. There is a massive field of fire, half a mile across or more. The flames reach hundreds of feet into the sky, and are shot through with massive discharges of lightning. The vast firestorm churns and writhes; there are currents in it, and you can make out vague shapes moving within.
In another direction, you see another forest. At first it seems calm, but you realize soon that it is sinking; sinking into a vast swamp in its center.
In a third direction, you see a great city standing on the bank of a river. You find yourself able to see into the earth, beneath it, and see... something vast and dark and shapeless, slimy and repulsive, slowly reaching upwards.
And in the fourth direction, you see a realm of eternal ice, the sun shining from a cloudless sky, and all across the flat icy landscape, movement... dark shadows moving across the ice. A great crack shatters the ice, and it begins to rise, as if the ice is being pushed up by something.
Meanwhile, the great tree next to you continues to smolder and rot. The dream ends.
The Interpretation of Dreams
Sven recognized the great tree in his dream as Yggdrasil?, the World Tree. (By then, he had seen it firsthand, when the party journeyed to the Other World to rescue the souls of Nikolai and Juliane from Volos, God of the Earth.)
Sven also recognized two of the four places which he saw in the dream. The second — the forest sinking into a swamp — was the Pripet Marshes?. The third was the city of Kiev, standing on the banks of the River Dnieper.
Sven also suspected that the first place — the firestorm near a forest's edge — might be a place along the northern edge of the southern steppes, where they meet the great forest south of Kiev; but he could not be sure. As for the fourth place — the realm of endless ice — Sven could only speculate; perhaps it was the cold realm of Jotunheim?, where he had never been? But this was only supposition.
Developments
So far, the PCs have definitively identified and fully resolved two of the four threats. The party has partial information on the remaining two threats, and they and their allies continue to work on resolving them.
